$1K Seniors NLHE Champ is Michael Davis at Event 43 at World Series of Poker

Thu, Jun 25th, 2009 @ 12:00am

The World Series of Poker was taken over by 2,707 seniors who quickly bought up all of the seats in this year's $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em World Championship, Event 43.

The field included luminaries such as Amarillo Slim, Humberto Brenes, Berry Johnston, Barbara Enright, Mike Sexton and T.J. CLoutier, but none of those big names would be able to capture the title. Neither could last year's winner Dan Lacourse, who won $368,832 after besting a field of 2,218 players.

After three days of play, it was Michael Davis who earned the gold bracelet and the $437,358 that came with it. The final table was rapidly thinned out until Davis got heads up with the Scott Buller, who had been the chip leader for most of the final table play.

Davis was never the chip leader, instead choosing to pick his spots carefully and chip up whenever he could. It turned out that the best spot for him showed up as soon as heads up play started. Davis convinced Buller to double him up as they got all in preflop. Davis's pocket Aces held up over Buller's Nines, and Davis had the chip lead for the first time.

Davis made it stand up after less than half an hour of play, turning a pair of Nines to steal the pot away from Buller and completing the comeback.

The big field built a prize pool of $2,463,700, of which the final table collected $1,357,546. 270 players got paid, and the minimum cash was $1,921.
