48th Sponsor Signs IGREA Bill to Regulate Online Poker, Online Gambling

by PokerPages.com
Mon, Apr 7th, 2008 @ 12:00am

US Congressional Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), became the 48th co-sponsor of H.R. 2046, the bill that House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-NY) introduced last year to legalize and regulate online poker and online gambling in the United States, called the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA).

Rep. Nadler added his signature to the bill the same week that a Congress hearing listened to financial institutions, poker and gambling supporters, federal regulatory officials and many more overwhelmingly criticize the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and the regulations proposed to implement it as unclear, unworkable, an immense burden to banking, and virtually impossible to enforce.

His signature also comes shortly after Barney Frank and Ron Paul released a letter they had sent to Ambassador Susan Schwab of the US Trade Representative's Office, requesting full disclosure of concessions granted as compensation to WTO trading partners for the USTR pulling online gambling out of treaties instead of complying with WTO rulings against the United States for excluding foreign online gaming operators, as evidenced by the UIGEA (click here for related article).

ABOUT REP. NADLER

Congressman Jerrold Nadler represents New York's Eighth Congressional district, one of the most diverse districts in the nation that includes Manhattan's West Side below 89th Street, Lower Manhattan, and areas of Brooklyn including Borough Park, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Sea Gate, Bay Ridge, and Bensonhurst.

Highly respected in the House of Representatives, Nadler, who is serving his 7th full term in Congress, is chair of the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Subcommittee, which considers all proposed constitutional amendments and deals with such issues as expression, religious freedom, privacy, due process, and civil rights, amongst others. He is also Assistant Whip and a senior member of both Frank's House Judiciary Committee and the House Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Subcommittees for Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, as well as for Railroads Pipelines and Hazardous Materials.
