Antigua Now on UK White List of Approved Gaming Advertisers

by PokerPages.com
Wed, Nov 5th, 2008 @ 12:00am

UK-based online poker players will soon see advertisements from more sites, as this past week the Caribbean dual island nation of Antigua and Barbuda was approved for the 'White List' of gaming jurisdictions legally allowed to advertise within the UK, and are exempt from an advertising ban that went into effect 1 September 2007 as part of the 2005 Gambling Act.

  • Antigua can begin advertising from November 20, 2008.

Notification of their approval came in a brief statement released by the DCMS last Friday, October 31, saying that Antigua had been added to its list of approved jurisdictions after "a reconsideration of Antigua's application following further representations made to the Secretary of State."

Antigua's application had initially been rejected this past January.

Bodog and Sportingbet are amongst Antigua's 15 current remote gambling licensees. But, according to Antiguan Finance Minister Errol Cort, Antigua will seek to leverage its newly acquired whitelisted status to attract more gaming operators to its jurisdiction.

Being on the White List means that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), who maintains the list, has determined that the gaming jurisdiction has a "rigorous licensing regime designed to stop children gambling, protect vulnerable people, keep games fair and keep out crime".

    APPROVED

The following gaming jurisdictions have been approved by the DCMS:

  • Countries within the European Economic Area (EEA), including Gibraltar and Malta
  • Alderney
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Isle of Man
  • Tasmania
  • STILL REJECTED

White list applications have been rejected, and have still not been approved by the DCMS from:

  • Alexander First Nation (Canadian Reservation)
  • Netherlands [Dutch] Antilles, Curacao
  • Kahnawake (Canadian Kahnawake Mohawk Territory)
