BC Poker Champion Arrested, Charged with Manslaughter

by PokerPages.com
Tue, Nov 24th, 2009 @ 12:00am

Just two days after taking down the BC Poker Championships Main Event, Sophon Sek of Cloverdale, BC, was arrested in connection with one of the most storied crimes in the Province's history.

According to CBC news, the 30-year-old Sek was charged with manslaugher and breaking and entering in the event now referred to across BC as "The Surrey Six Slaughter". Sek is the 6th person charged in connection with the 2007 highrise slayings, which claimed the lives of four suspected gang members and two innocent bystanders, and is scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court on Nov. 30.

The shocking news comes just two days after Sek took home $364,364 CAD for outlasting 679 others in the $2,700 CAD buy-in BC Poker Championship Main Event. Sek topped a tough feild that included Canadian pros such as Gavin Smith, Brad Booth and Greg 'FBT' Mueller, who captured a pair of bracelets in 2009.

Rob D'amato pocketed $233,359 for runner-up, while Kyriakos Nicolaou earned $147,236 for finishing third, but the River Rock Casino seems to be waiting to release the Main Event results, perhaps due to the fact that Sek's 1st-place winnings are currently being held by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. Results for the first two events of the BCPC can be found here.

Last year's BCPC Main Event was won by none other than "Kid Poker" Daniel Negreanu, who was the last standing in a feild of 688 players, taking home $371,910 CAD. Find 2008 BCPC results right here.
