British Team Captures 2008 Poker Nations CupThu, Apr 17th, 2008 @ 12:00am Strains of Rule Britannia could be heard at the PartyPoker.com Poker Nations Cup, as Team Great Britain took the honors for their country in the tag team formatted competition that completed this week. Poker Nations Cup is Channel 4's and PartyPoker's innovative team poker tournament, where teams consisting of 5 poker professionals and 1 online qualifier compete in 6 heats (except the USA who featured celebrity player Montel Willams); each player competes only once earning points for their individual finish. Each team captain's judgment is vital to the outcome, as it is up to them to make tactical substitutions and strategic "time outs". The winning GB team included team captain Roland De Wolfe, on-a-winning-streak Neil Channing, Surinder Sunar, Joe Beevers, Ian Frazer and online qualifier Charlie Durbin. Channing just came off the high of winning the Irish Open, as well as being the player that clinched the cup for their GB team. In fact, Channing anchored team GB in a thrilling heads-up with Ireland's Donnacha O'Dea. A turning point in the play came when Channing went all-in with 8 4 off suit, which got called by O'Dea's 2 2. So Channing was behind on the flop and the turn only for a 4 to hit on the river which knocked O'Dea. Then O'Dea went all-in with 10c 3c, only to be called by Channing's 10h 9h. A 10 on the turn gave Britain the cup, repeating their 2006 win. "I'm absolutely delighted," said GB team captain de Wolfe. "In many ways it is even better to win a team event for your country than win an individual title. I am so proud that the selections for my team were vindicated," he added. A PartyPoker spokesman commented, "Neil Channing is running so good that Great Britain looked like the winners when it got short handed. Full credit must go to Ireland, however, who brought a great atmosphere to the tournament and very nearly pipped them at the post. On paper, the likes of Chris Ferguson and Jamie Gold for Team USA look very intimidating but it seems like when they cross the Atlantic for these tournaments they just can't quite get it right." Coverage of the 2008 event will be produced for Channel 4 in the UK by Presentable, presented by Vicky Coren and broadcast in the autumn. The action will then be distributed internationally. Each player paid a buy-in of $5,000, with $100,000 added by PartyPoker.com, which brought the total prize pool to $280,000.
