California State Poker Championship to Crown Poker King of the Golden State

The 2008 California State Poker Championship (CSPC) is just a couple weeks away, with an estimated $7 million ripe for the taking. The first of 18 events fires up on September 2nd, from the historic felt of Los Angeles' Commerce Casino.

Buy-ins for the 18 events range from as little as $120 to $1,580. The latter being the price for the Main Event, which cranks up on September 20th. The winner of the Main Event will be guaranteed a nice payday, no less than $300,000. Special no limit Hold'em events on September 6th and 13th with feature a $335 buy-in, three levels worth of rebuys and $200,000 guaranteed in each prize pool.

Last year, Eric Crisp outlasted 361 others to capture the 2007 CSPC title and $324,815. Actor Ben Affleck remains the tourney's most notable champion. Affleck took down the 2004 championship event, winning more than $350,000 in the process. In 2004, the CSPC Main Event carried a $10,000 price tag and a smaller field, which was just 90 players strong.

"The Cal State Championship has developed quite a reputation," said Commerce Casino Tournament Director Cheri Dokken, "It might be because the tournament was won previously by actor Ben Affleck, or because top-notch talent shows up each year, or maybe it's the prestige that comes from winning a big tournament at the world's largest poker room. Whatever the reason, this is one of Commerce Casino's largest yearly poker events outside of the L.A. Poker Classic."

Single table satellite games for the CSPC begin at 11 a.m. on August 28. Tournaments will begin at 6 p.m., except for the Main Event, which will start at 2 p.m. Events that top the 100 entrant mark will be played over two days.
