California State Poker Championship to Crown Poker King of the Golden State

by PokerPages.com
Thu, Aug 14th, 2008 @ 12:00am

The 2008 California State Poker Championship (CSPC) is just a couple weeks away, with an estimated $7 million ripe for the taking. The first of 18 events fires up on September 2nd, from the historic felt of Los Angeles' Commerce Casino.

Buy-ins for the 18 events range from as little as $120 to $1,580. The latter being the price for the Main Event, which cranks up on September 20th. The winner of the Main Event will be guaranteed a nice payday, no less than $300,000. Special no limit Hold'em events on September 6th and 13th with feature a $335 buy-in, three levels worth of rebuys and $200,000 guaranteed in each prize pool.

Last year, Eric Crisp outlasted 361 others to capture the 2007 CSPC title and $324,815. Actor Ben Affleck remains the tourney's most notable champion. Affleck took down the 2004 championship event, winning more than $350,000 in the process. In 2004, the CSPC Main Event carried a $10,000 price tag and a smaller field, which was just 90 players strong.

"The Cal State Championship has developed quite a reputation," said Commerce Casino Tournament Director Cheri Dokken, "It might be because the tournament was won previously by actor Ben Affleck, or because top-notch talent shows up each year, or maybe it's the prestige that comes from winning a big tournament at the world's largest poker room. Whatever the reason, this is one of Commerce Casino's largest yearly poker events outside of the L.A. Poker Classic."
