College Students Turn to Online Poker to Finance Education

With costs to attend university are reaching mid to upper five figures, a trend amongst some students is to play online poker to pay their bills, rather than wait tables or tend bar.

After winning $160,000 in a tournament last year, University of Minnesota sophomore Hunter Fritz told his University paper that he considers playing poker online his job. He plays about three hours per day.

Fritz isn't the only University student putting himself through college by playing poker online. Marketing junior Ryan Tongen told the school paper that he plays online 30 to 40 hours per week and pulls in a six-figure income each year, though he noted that playing poker for a living tends to take the fun out of the game.

Tongen said he hasn't had much trouble balancing school and poker, but at times the money earned and time spent playing poker can make staying motivated for school difficult.

Both players said they plan to play poker for the foreseeable future, but won't depend on it as a sole source of income.

"Nothing is certain, and at the end of the day, you're gambling," Tongen said. "So if the worst happens, I'll still be safe."

Considering how getting a college loan won't be so easy to get in the future, having alternatives like playing online poker and working extra jobs will become a necessity, Rep. Tim Mahoney, (D- FL) told The Stuart News.

Referring to the loan crisis, he said, "Wait 'til next fall. Another looming crisis for college kids being able to borrow money to be able to afford to go to a Syracuse University or George Washington University, where it's $38,000 a year for tuition. There's nobody out there anymore willing to lend."

POKER AS A BENEFICIAL LEARNING TOOL

Harvard Law Professor Nesson believes that playing poker has educational and business benefits, and so he founded the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTPS).

The Society views poker as an exceptional game of skill that can be used as a powerful teaching tool at all levels of academia and in secondary education. They recognize that poker can be a metaphor for skills of life, business, politics and international relations.

A major goal of GPSTS is to create an open online curriculum centered on poker that will draw the brightest minds together, both from within and outside of the conventional university setting, to promote open education and Internet democracy.

"Poker teaches many lessons that are transferable to the challenges of life, including strategic understanding of risk, resource management and self control," said Nesson, a tenured professor on the Harvard faculty for close to forty years. "When to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, as the song says."
