Day 1A of WPT World Poker Finals A WrapWed, Nov 5th, 2008 @ 12:00am The World Poker Tour was back at it on Wednesday, kicking off Day 1A of the World Poker Finals at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. The day began with 162 hopefuls, but by the end of five levels of play, just 97 would be bagging chips to bring with them to Day 2. The field of 162 is a bit small. Some 575 players coughed up the buy in last year, so barring a miraculous turnaround, the prize pool will be making a big drop off from 2007. Last year, former World Poker Finals winners Nick Schulman and Nenad Medic both found themselves an another WPF final table. Neither could come away with #2, as Mike Vela was crowned champion, earning $1.7 million. Poker Pages' blogger TJ Cloutier, Joe Sebok, Kathy Liebert and Vela each showed up for the first of two Day 1 flights, only to be sent to the rail before the close of play. Cloutier ran his nines right into pocket aces, while Sebok got it in with the higher kicking trips, only to see his opponent fill up on the river. Jason Potter found himself on the good side of a set-vs.-set confrontation, on his way to more than 180,000 and the Day 1A chip lead. Potter will have his work cut out for him when he returns to play on Friday, as former WPT winners Jonathan Little and Kevin Saul each bagged about 130,000 chip at the end of the night. The top ten: The second wave of Day 1'ers will be in on Thursday. Cards will be in the air at 12 p.m. EST.
