Disappointing Turnout for US Poker Championship Main EventMon, Oct 6th, 2008 @ 12:00am Day 1 of the United States Poker Championship's $10,000 Main Event began Sunday afternoon. Although this event attracted 164 players last year, only 52 turned out to play this year, creating a prize pool of $504,400. The lack of television coverage since ESPN discontinued their contract is the most frequently cited issue, but recent developments in the financial markets and high gas prices may have also contributed to the low turnout. Here are the official payouts. Only the final 6 players will get paid:
Lance Funston, a perennial favorite here in Atlantic City, turned up to play again this year, despite the fact that he has never cashed in a tournament, ever, anywhere. True to form, Lance was the first player to bust out.
Poker-playing brothers Jason Gray and Craig 'MrCasino' Gray both played and started the day seated at the same table, wearing matching hoodies. Jason ran his pocket Kings into the pocket Aces of Rick Austin during level 3 and the Aces held up, making Jason the first Gray to hit the rail. Craig survived the day and goes to day two ninth in chips with 51,325. Rick Austin goes into day 2 with 93,800, putting him in third place.
WSOP bracelet holder Chris Reslock was never able to get his game in the right gear today and busted out during level 4. Foxwoods WPT winner Nick Schulman made it to level 5, but ran his pocket Kings into a set of 6s and was dispatched.
Forty players survived five levels of play and will return at 1:15pm Monday to continue. Robert Ford is the chip leader going to day 2 with 131,500 chips. Other notables still in the hunt; Jordan Rich is fourth with 63,050; Ryan Young is sixth with 58,775; Matt Stout is seventh with 54,200; and Matt Glantz is tenth with 51,000.
Defending USPC champion Adam Gerber is still alive with 37,000 chips, just below the average of 39,000. Also alive is 2006 USPC Champion Alex Jacob. He was down to fewer than 3,000 chips at one point during day one, but managed to come back to 10,575 by the end of play. Day 2 will begin at 1:15pm EDT Monday. Live coverage links:
