Eric Brooks Captures World Series of Poker Seven Stud ChampionshipTue, Jun 10th, 2008 @ 12:00am After three grueling days of poker, Eric Brooks has been crowned the World Champion of Seven Card Stud. Brooks navigated a field of poker legends and a loaded final table to grab the first-place prize of $415,856 and the coveted gold bracelet. Vassilios Lazarou was one of only two players at the table with a WSOP bracelet to their name. Unfortunately, Lazarou would be the first to leave, after he ran into the rolled up deuces of David Oppenheim.
Oppenheim entered the day with the chip lead, but would turn that lead over to Alexander Kostritsyn in the first level. Kostritsyn would go on to knock out Oppenheim, denying the high stakes pro his first bracelet by squeezing out a third five on the river. Kostritsyn would then turn his attention to Jim Paluszek. Paluszek, who also cashed in Event 7, ran his short stack into the 21-year-old Russian's aces up, earning a 6th-place finish. Erik Seidel entered the day with a shot at the 9th bracelet of his career. Seidel had been flirting with elimination off and on since the late stages of Day Two. He again found himself short and proceeded to run his last chips into Minh Ly, who picked up a pair of aces and the pot. Sadly, Ly could not put those chips to good use. He would find himself at risk against Kostritsyn, who was able to find a straight on the river to eliminate the tournament veteran in 4th-place. Kostritsyn was then crippled after paying to see Brooks' queens full. Brooks would finish him off for good when his aces and tens held up. Kostritsyn, who came to fame after defeating Seidel heads-up at the Aussie Millions final table, would be denied his first bracelet. Brooks entered heads-up play with a 2-1 chip lead over Fu Wong. After a few hands, Wong was crippled. After a few more, it was over. In the hand, Wong would find trip fours on 6th street to take the lead, only to see Brooks dig up a flush on the river. Brooks, in the first tournament cash of his life, had conquered the first ever $10K World Championship of Seven Card Stud. According to WSOP.com, Brooks says he plans to donate his winnings to the Decision Education Foundation, which helps students K-12 learn the science of decision making.
