France & EC Set More Talks on Opening French Gambling MonopolyFri, Nov 9th, 2007 @ 12:00am France and the European Commission (EC) have agreed to work towards the opening up of the French gambling market, affecting online poker, so have scheduled further meetings in February and March with the aim of finding a solution to end the legal action the EC is taking against France, and before France takes over the EU presidency in June.
This stems from a meeting in Brussels this past Tuesday, where Eric Woerth, the French budget minister and Jean-Pierre Jouyet, European affairs minister, met with officials from the European Commission (DC) competition commission of Charlie McCreevy's office to discuss opening of the French gambling market now dominated by the French state-monopolies Francais des Jeux and Pari-Mutuel Urbain (PMU). "A process of intense dialogue will be started on technical and political issues with the aim of meeting again in early February," Drewes said. This follows Final warnings the EC issued this past June regarding the French monopolistic stance over betting and gaming before the case goes to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), along with nine other EU states over what it sees as restrictions on competition in gambling preventing free trade across the EU for EU-based gaming companies (click here for related article). McCreevy's spokesman, Oliver Drewes, said the legal issues had not been resolved and that the legal action will continue. Prior to Tuesday's meeting, Woerth said any opening-up of the market would have to meet a list of French demands, including tax conditions and powers to combat money laundering and unlicensed online betting sites (click here for related article). Brussels has also criticized France last month after Petter Nylander, the chief executive of Swedish-listed online betting firm Unibet was arrested in the Netherlands on French orders (click here for related article). "The French ministers also confirmed there will be no new kinds of complaints issued similar to the one that led to the arrest of Mr Nylander," Drewes said. Read Related Articles:
