Frank Gary Wins $1,500 Mixed Hold'em Tournament at World Series of PokerWed, Jun 25th, 2008 @ 12:00am Frank Gary came out of nowhere to win his first World Series of Poker bracelet and $219,562. He hit an incredible streak of luck to defeat Jonathan Tamayo heads up. The final table was a drama in three acts. First, Nick Binger set out to steamroll the competition and prove he was more than just Michael Binger's younger brother. But with the bracelet almost on his wrist, he imploded, finishing in third place. And then it was Tamayo and Gary's turn to battle for the victory. Tamayo played impeccable poker all day, but he couldn't stand up to the force of a cold deck, shipping pot after pot, and finally the bracelet, to Gary.
After Binger's sixth knock out, Michael and the rest of his cheering section ordered champagne to begin the celebration a little early. But Nick had lost the chip lead by the time the bubbly arrived. Jonathan Tamayo chipped away at Binger's stack a little at a time, and Nick was never able to regain control. After battling three-handed for nearly five hours, he finally succumbed to the skilled play of Jonathan Tamayo. Tamayo began heads up play with a dominant chip lead, but Gary quickly doubled through him to make it a genuine match. The poker gods were smiling on Gary as he hit out after out. Tamayo was finally crippled when he flopped the nut straight, and Gary caught a runner-runner full house to take most of Jonathan's chips. A few hands later, it was all over. Frank Gary picks up his second WSOP cash in his first final table appearance. The retired 42-year-old now travels around the country in his RV playing poker. Jonathan Tamayo just graduated from Cornell, and at 22 years old, now has four WSOP cashes.
