German Online Poker Pro Claims $1,500 PLO8 Title at WSOP

by PokerPages.com
Fri, Jun 27th, 2008 @ 12:00am

At a final table highlighted by eight-time bracelet winner Erik Seidel, it was a 21-year-old German online poker phenom who rose to the occassion. Martin Klaser built up momentum and charged through the Event 43, $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha 8 or Better, final table to grab the gold bracelet and $216,211.

Martin KlaserKlaser entered the day third in chips, just slightly behind Seidel and chip leader Jon Maren. Once the ball started rolling, it was Klaser and Casey Kastle who could be credited with every elimination at the final table. Kastle knocked out four players, including Seidel. Klaser took care of the other three, clearing the table for heads-up play.

By the time Klaser and Kastle were one-on-one, Klaser held nearly a 3-1 chip lead. Klaser would put those chips to good use, winning 10 of the first 12 heads-up pots. He would take down the 13th as well.

Kastle called a pot sized raise from Klaser to see the 9 9 J flop. Kastle moved in for his last 120K and Klaser called. Kastle's J-10-3-2 at risk vs. the A-3-Q-Q of Klaser.

By the time the call was made, Kastle knew that his top pair was no good. Klaser was screaming for a queen, just to ice it. Somebody must have been listening, since the queen of spades hit on the turn, giving Klaser the championship.

Klaser is a Team Full Tilt Pro, making his first live tournament cash. Klaser earned his Full Tilt patch by taking down the Full Tilt Poker Million Euro Challenge in Germany. His win on German TV gave him a shot playing some Team Full Tilt members heads-up. Klaser was able to defeat both Gus Hansen and Chris Ferguson, earning €350,000 in the process.

Final table results:

  • 1st $216,249 Martin Klaser
  • 2nd $137,985 Casey Kastle
  • 3rd $83,538 Michael Fetter
  • 4th $68,304 Erik Seidel
  • 5th $56,019 Jon Maren
  • 6th $44,226 Chad Burum
  • 7th $34,389 Joseph Haddad
  • 8th $27,027 Larry Wright
  • 9th $19,656 Tom Chambers
