Germany To Ring In New Years With Online Gaming Ban

by PokerPages.com
Sun, Dec 30th, 2007 @ 12:00am

Taking a page from the U.S. and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), Germany will begin its own online gaming ban on Jan. 1st.

According to Bloomberg.com, all 16 German States approved the new anti-gaming laws after voting held mid-December. Any Web-based betting is off limits, with the possibility of individual States blocking bank transfers and ordering Internet service providers to deny access to online gaming sites.

The ban will also reach into advertising, both on television and the Internet. Ads will be able to inform viewers of the site, but not entice or invite the idea of gambling.

Many believe that Germany is implementing the ban to keep money inside their borders, retaining a state monopoly of lotteries and local gambling. The new laws define illegal gaming as online bets placed from a German territory to a company based outside or Germany.

Ratification papers have been received by 13 of the 16 German states, fulfilling the required majority. The remaining three ratification documents are not needed, but still expected before the end of the year.

The lack of television coverage since ESPN discontinued their contract is the most frequently cited issue, but recent developments in the financial markets and high gas prices may have also contributed to the low turnout.

Duplicate Poker Closes October 5th
12am Mon Oct 6th, 2008

Duplicate Poker closed this past Sunday, which is strange, since only two weeks ago they announced that they were thriving and celebrating player number 250,000 (see below). Apparently their idea to offer poker fashioned after duplicate bridge, where tables competed over how the same hands were played out, didn't catch the fancy of enough of the poker playing masses to weather their current financial storm. But they do say when the climate changes, they may reopen.

This past Friday, Professor Ben van der Genugten, an expert in probability and mathematical statistics, challenged the Dutch Supreme Court's classification of poker as a game of chance, citing how a formula he co-developed and is used by the courts pegs poker at a higher skill level than most fantasy sports, which the court rules are a game of skill.
