Glen Chorny is European Poker Tour Grand Final Champion

by PokerPages.com
Fri, Apr 18th, 2008 @ 12:00am

In what has been described as the longest, biggest, and some of the best poker the European Poker Tour (EPT) has seen, 22 year-old Ontario Canada native Glen Chorny bested a field of 842 players to become the new PokerStars European Poker Tour Grand Final champion, winning a record first-place prize of 2,020,000 Euros (roughly USD $3.2 million, or GBP 1,613.6 million), the largest prize ever handed out at a European poker tournament.

When the day began, no one was certain how it would turn out, as so many strong players were present. Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano, at his third EPT final table, was looking for his record ninth EPT cash. Antonio Esfandiari was looking for an EPT title to accompany his WPT and WSOP wins to make an astounding Triple Crown. And many bets were on Isaac Baron to capture the title as well.

The final table began with these chip counts :

  • Seat 1. Denes Kalo - 1,190,000
  • Seat 2. Michael Martin - 1,320,000
  • Seat 3. Luca Pagano - Team PokerStars Pro -- 688,000
  • Seat 4. Valeriy Ilikyan - 1,396,000
  • Seat 5. Antonio Esfandiari - 501,000
  • Seat 6. Maxime Villemure - 1,206,000
  • Seat 7. Glen Chorny - PokerStars qualifier -- 3,613,000
  • Seat 8. Isaac Baron - PokerStars qualifier -- 2,853,000
  • After dispatching Maxime Villemure in a third place finish for Euros 715,000, it turned out that only a minute more was needed for Chorny to end the 13 hours of play.

Glen Chorny sat with a ten-to-one chip lead over Denes Kalo. The Hungarian knew he needed to act fast. With KhQd he made his move, raising first, then Chorny moving all-in and calling in a shot, showing his Ah5h. The board came AsQs6s6cTd, making Glen Chorny the Season 4 PokerStars.com EPT Grand Final champion.

Here are the final standings, shown in Euros, the currency awarded:

  • 1. Glen Chorny - Canada- 2,020,000
  • 2. Denes Kalo - Hungary 1,179,000
  • 3. Maxime Villemure - Canada- 715,000
  • 4. Isaac Baron - USA- 589,000
