iMEGA Still Challenging UIGEA Despite Party Poker Parent Settling with DoJTue, Jun 3rd, 2008 @ 12:00am Joe Brennan, Jr, founder of the the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA.org), told Gambling911 that iMEGA would continue their efforts to challenge of the legality of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA), despite the buzz around Party Poker parent-PartyGaming's founders agreeing (in principal) to settle with the US Government for an amount of $1 billion. He stressed that the deal is meant to forgive the past crimes of an online gambling company, and doesn't change the status of UIGEA in any way. "We're happy for Party Gaming, their founders and their investors," Brennan, Jr. told Gambling911. "This reported settlement, if true, will lift the dark cloud from over their heads, particularly their founders and executives who have had to been very careful about avoiding travel to the US. Party Gaming will also now have access to the capital they need to make acquisitions necessary for them to begin to grow again and try to restore their shareholder value. "However, this possible settlement in no way affects our challenge in the US Federal Courts. UIGEA remains the law of the land. As a result, Americans-- while free to gamble offline in 48 of our 50 states- are still effectively prohibited from gambling online in all 50 of them. Americans' fundamental rights to privacy and choice while online are being targeted in a way that is inconsistent with their rights offline. That inconsistency- between Americans' rights online and offline- has been iMEGA's primary concern from the start. "And, though this news is good in that it ends the uncertainty for Party Gaming and their founders- albeit at a very steep price, one no doubt meant to send a message to the rest of the industry- the truth is that Party Gaming and other offshore Internet gambling operators are prohibited from doing business with American players. Let's face facts: the United States is the biggest potential market for i-gaming operators. None of them can be happy that they are being blocked from more than half of the world's i-gaming market. "In the final analysis, this settlement changes nothing. Americans are not able to play again at Party Poker, because Party Gaming is still out of the US market. Until UIGEA is overturned in US Federal Court, things are going to stay that way." Read Related Articles:
