It's no UFO- It's a Giant PKR Poker Banner Flying Over London

by PokerPages.com
Tue, Apr 15th, 2008 @ 12:00am

As competition for European players heats up, so do the guerilla marketing tactics used to recruit poker players as evidenced by PKR's marketing director Simon Prodger, who has commissioned a 25,000 square foot banner to be flown in the skies over London.

The giant banner is three-quarters the size of a soccer pitch. And when trailed through the skies behind a helicopter, it can be seen for 10 miles, to an estimated 1 million people each flight.

PKR.com partnered with Helibanners Ltd. and their patented Helicopter Overcity Banner Systems to produce the huge banner and to fly it in and around London, primarily during major events.

Simon Prodger said of the positive response to the three flights already taken, "It's a pretty awe-inspiring spectacle, and one that no one expects to see. We've gotten reports of sightings from all over London, and people have even been sending in their own camera phone images."

Helibanners operates in a number of countries globally and PKR.com is considering expanding their advertising to other key markets.

WANT TO SEE IT???

The next scheduled banner flight is 26 April, and the flight path will include Central London and the Chelsea v Manchester United Premiership football match at Stanford Bridge.

12am Mon Oct 6th, 2008

Day 1 of the United States Poker Championship's $10,000 Main Event began Sunday afternoon. Although this event attracted 164 players last year, only 52 turned out to play this year, creating a prize pool of $504,400. The lack of television coverage since ESPN discontinued their contract is the most frequently cited issue, but recent developments in the financial markets and high gas prices may have also contributed to the low turnout.

Duplicate Poker Closes October 5th
12am Mon Oct 6th, 2008

Duplicate Poker closed this past Sunday, which is strange, since only two weeks ago they announced that they were thriving and celebrating player number 250,000 (see below). Apparently their idea to offer poker fashioned after duplicate bridge, where tables competed over how the same hands were played out, didn't catch the fancy of enough of the poker playing masses to weather their current financial storm. But they do say when the climate changes, they may reopen.

Dutch Professor Challenges Poker's Chance Classification with Formula
12am Fri Oct 3rd, 2008

This past Friday, Professor Ben van der Genugten, an expert in probability and mathematical statistics, challenged the Dutch Supreme Court's classification of poker as a game of chance, citing how a formula he co-developed and is used by the courts pegs poker at a higher skill level than most fantasy sports, which the court rules are a game of skill. Because of this inconsistency, the Professor is calling for the court to revoke the classification of poker as a game of chance.
