Jordan Smith Grabs Gold In World Series of Poker Event #36

by PokerPages.com
Sun, Jun 21st, 2009 @ 12:00am

Final table railbirds for Event #36 of the World Series of Poker were going nuts on Saturday, pulling loudly for a pair of females trying to take the bracelet away the boys. But in the end, the ladies would fall short and Jordan Smith, a dude, walked away with the cash and the bracelet.

Thursday saw 1,695 players fork over the $2,000 buy-in for a shot at No Limit Hold'em glory. Just over $3 million would divied up between the final 171 finishers, $586,212 of that going to the eventual champ. When the final day fired up Saturday afternoon at the Rio, only 17 still had a shot at the bracelet.

Among the 17 were a couple females, Almira Skripchenko and Laurence Grondin, looking to become the first since Katja Thater in 2007 to score a bracelet for the girls in an open event. Sadly, Skripchenko, a pro chess player from Paris, would fall out in 7th, and Grondin, of Montreal, fell just one spot short of heads-up play.

Heads-up saw Smith enter with a slight chip lead over Ken Lennaard of Stockhold, Sweden. Lennaard would wrestle away the lead at one point, but after a key double thru that saw Smith show a 10-high straight to Lennaards 9-high, the Swede suddenly had his back against the wall. In the final hand, Smith flopped a diamond flush and was able to dispatch Lennaard, who flopped top pair and a diamond re-draw, but still came up short.

For Smith, this was his second cash of the 2009 WSOP, and his 11th in the last three years. Until Saturday, Smith's biggest live score had been $119,228 for taking down a WPT Southern Poker Championship $1K prelim event back in January. Lennaard tops $1 million in career earnings with the $360,439 score for 2nd-place. Lennaard also finished 20th in Event #32, the previous $2,000 No Limit tourney, which left him on the Day 3 bubble.

Final table results:

  • 1 - Jordan "scarface_79" Smith (Tool, TX, USA) - $586,212
  • 2 - Ken Lennaard (Stockholm, Sweden) - $360,439
  • 3 - Laurence Grondin (Montreal, QC, Canada) - $237,537
  • 4 - Joe Morneau (Blue Springs, MO, USA) - $166,584
  • 5 - Anthony Roux (London, UK) - $120,311
  • 6 - Pat Atchison (Fort Worth, TX, USA) - $95,631
  • 7 - Almira Skripchenko (Paris, France) - $78,664
  • 8 - Andrew Seden (Southampton, UK) - $67,867
  • 9 - Jonathan Plens (Toronto, ON, Canada) - $61,081
