Keikoan Captures Harvey's Lake Tahoe WSOPC Championship
Thu, Nov 19th, 2009 @ 12:00am
This week marked the finale of the biggest annual tournament series in Northern Nevada, the WSOP Circuit championship at Harvey's Lake Tahoe. While the Main Event saw only a modest turnout, it did boast of a tough final table, and a WSOP bracelet owner as the eventual champion.
Matt Keikoan is the proud owner of the latest WSOP Circuit championship ring, along with $106,435 of hard earned cash. The 41-year-old pro now has a ring to match the bracelet he picked up in 2008. Keikoan outlasted 1,591 others to and pocketed $550K on the way to the WSOP bracelet, but only had to top 63 challengers to grab the matching ring. This score puts Keikoan just a few bucks shy of the $1.2 million mark in career earnings.
Keikoan outshined a final table that included not only bracelet winner David Woo, but online pro Ari Engel and WPT Festa Al Lago champion Tommy Vedes as well. Woo entered the final day with the chip lead, only to fall in 7th. He was soon follwed by Vedes and Engel, who finished in 5th and 4th-place, respectively. In the final hand against heads-up opponent Justin Hallstrom, Keikoan had his AK hold up vs. A5 to take down the title.
"There were some good players here," said Keikoan after the win, "but I always feel comfortable playing at Lake Tahoe because I have come here to the Circuit each year it's been held. It's kind of a home field advantage for me, I believe."
"I live only about three hours away from here," said Keikoan, who resides in nearby San Rafael, Calif. "I used to come here all the time on vacation when I was a kid. I really love it here at Lake Tahoe."
