Ladbrokes Tells Sweden's Gambling Monopoly: See You in Court

Sweden's state-owned gambling monopoly, Svenska Spel, was in the media spotlight again this week, when lawyers representing the company sent Ladbrokes notice threatening legal action unless it withdraws an advertising campaign it launched in Sweden on May 1st; no mention was made whether it is a poker or betting campaign.

According to reports from Gaming Intelligence Group today, Ladbrokes has said that it welcomes the opportunity to defend its campaign in court.

Sweden is already under European Commission scruntiny for national gambling restrictions focusing on various issues relating to poker games and tournaments.

The Commission said that a Member State cannot invoke the need to restrict its citizens' access to betting services if at the same time it incites and encourages them to participate in state lotteries, games of chance or betting which benefits the state's finances (click here for related article).

Also on 6 February 2008, the Swedish Supreme Court granted the editors of newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen the right to appeal their criminal prosecutions for accepting advertisements from foreign online betting companies, like Ladbrokes.

The decision obliges the Swedish Court of Appeal to consider whether Swedish gambling laws are compatible with European legislation and the opinions laid down by the European Court in recent cases such as Placanica (click here for related article).
