Local Wins PokerStars Russian Poker Tour Inaugural Event

With the WPT, EPT, LAPT and APPT already under their belts, PokerStars officially added the Russian Poker Tour to their stable last week by wrapping up an event in St. Petersburg.

A total of 201 players from Russia and around the globe took to the felt last week for the RPT St. Petersburg Main Event. Take a few fees out of the $5,000 buy-in and nearly $1 million USD (approx. 36 million RUB) was up for grabs, with about $295,000 (10,616,000 RUB) going to the eventual winner.

A few of Team PokerStars Pros were on hand, but couldn't make any noise. PokerStars' local boys, Alex Kravchenko and Ivan Demidov, were joined at the event by poster girl Vanessa Rousso, but none of them were able to earn a seat at the final table.

Seven of the final nine players hailed from Russia, with everyone at the final table looking up at Moldava's Dimitru Gaina in the chip counts. Dimitru would fall in 8th, eventually leading to a heads-up battle between Oleg Suntsov of Russia and Vadim Markushevsky of Belarus. Eventually, Suntsov would get Markushevsky to move in bad, the Russian's QQ in front of the Belarussian's top pair of nines. The ladies would hold and Suntsov was crowned the first ever Russian Poker Tour champion.

Final table results (in Russian rubles):

  • 1 - Oleg Suntsov - 10,616,000 RUB
  • 2 - Vadim Markushevsky - 5,469,000
  • 3 - Alexander Pantukhin - 3,217,000
  • 4 - Sergey Solntsev - 2,380,000
  • 5 - Bulat Bikmetov - 1,930,000
  • 6 - Sergey Popuk - 1,608,000
  • 7 - Anatoly Ozhenilok - 1,287,000
  • 8 - Dimitru Gaina - 965,000
  • 9 - Evgeny Zaytsev - 643,000
  • Next up for the RPT is a stop in Moscow, with the Main Event cranking up on February 25th.
