Louisiana Passes Bill for Poker Tournaments in Bars

by PokerPages.com
Wed, May 16th, 2007 @ 12:00am

The Louisiana House passed a bill May 14 to allow over 6,000 licensed bars and restaurants in Louisiana to offer promotional poker tournaments under certain specific conditions.

The bill, HB484, is authored by State Representative Warren Triche.

Notably, it excludes Orleans Parish which consists of the greater New Orleans metro area. So Mardi Gras participants and tourists will not be able to play poker on famous Bourbon Street.

The majority of the conditions specified by the bill restrict the hosting business or employees from materially participating in or providing materials to conduct the poker tournaments. And it limits each location to hosting no more than one tournament per week.

It also strictly prohibits the hosting business or its employees from directly benefiting from the tournaments or receiving anything of value from the tournaments.

Besides forbidding the usual collection of any form of cover charge or entry fee or revenue share, the bill also forbids businesses from raising their prices for food or drink during the tournaments.

It does expect and permit hosting establishments to indirectly benefit from the tournaments through increased volume of food and drink sales.

But Louisiana residents should not sign up to play just yet. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco has announced her intention to veto the bill. So contact your representative if you wish to show your support for the bill.
