Moscow Millions Poker Tourney Still On: New Date & Official Sports Event Status

Mon, Aug 13th, 2007 @ 12:00am

Organizers of Russia's Moscow Millions poker tournament in a recent release relayed that the event is still being held, but on new dates of 24-26 November, with 150 entrants still expected (the max the venue can hold), along with the good news that the event now has "official sports event" status.

The event quickly recovered from the recent withdrawal of Full Tilt as sponsor, reportedly due to a schedule overload, when news that The Russian Sport Poker Federation declared the inaugural Poker Million an "official sports event".

"The Federation is proud to bring such an official status to the game in this country, and to share this with all people across the world fond of poker," the organization's president, Dmitry Lesnoy said in a release.

Moscow Millions organizers are quick to point out that status as an official sports event means that anyone winning a share of the anticipated $1.5 million in prize money, whether a local or international player, effectively owes no Russian taxes.

The winner of the Moscow Millions will not only walk away with a large share of the estimated $1.5 Million prize pool, but also enjoy the dual titles of "National Poker Champion" and the "Poker Federation Grand Champion of Russia".

Pokerprofessionals spokesperson and Poker Millions tournament organizer Anastasia Bauer remains optimistic that the event will quickly become one of the 'must-attend' poker destinations on the poker calendar.

"We continue to look forward to hosting some of the top Poker professionals from all corners of the globe, who will quickly discover the charms of Russia and particularly our vibrant city of Moscow- a hub of attractions that truly never sleep," added Bauer.

Similar to the evolution of other prestigious international tournaments, Bauer appreciates that the number of attendees will grow over time, but affirms that Pokerprofessionals has a mission to establish the Moscow Millions as one of the richest and most prestigious annual Poker events outside of the United States.

Being an official sports competition instead of a gambling game additionally means that the event is exempt from falling under Russia's new Gambling bill sponsored by President Putin and passed last November which will ban casino gambling all together, except in four special zones, beginning 2009 (two in European Russia, one in Siberia and one in the Far East). Such exemption will also help the long-term success of the event.

Land-based Poker Clubs throughout Russia have now started conducting satellites for the Moscow Millions.
