PartyPoker Pushes for Mike Sexton's Induction to Poker Hall of Fame
Thu, May 28th, 2009 @ 12:00am
With this year's nominations to the Poker Hall of Fame open May 26 through July 2nd, PartyPoker has lost no time to support the nomination of its ambassador, World Poker Tour Host Mike Sexton. They also encourage other poker fans to nominate Sexton.
Anyone interested in poker can nominate a person by submitting the person's name and text (up to 250 words) describing why that person should be the newest Poker Hall of Fame member. Longtime players or those who have contributed to the game are eligible to be considered for the Poker Hall of Fame.
Harrah's officials will announce the names of the top 10 nominees during the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. Those top 10 nominees will then be reviewed by the Hall of Fame committee which can potentially add anyone who was overlooked. The list will next be voted on by the 16 living Hall of Fame members. In order to be inducted, a player must accrue 75% of the vote.
"We encourage the poker community to vote online for Mike Sexton's induction into poker's hall of fame," said a Party Poker spokesman.
"Mike famously said that poker takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master - it takes five minutes to vote and mark the lifetime achievement of the master! Mike meets all the criteria and deserves to be top of the list when the process gets to the Hall of Fame committee."
Many rising poker stars have grown up listening to Sexton co-hosting (along with Vince Van Patten) the weekly WPT television show, as he's been co-host from season one through the current season seven.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of his one WSOP bracelet win in a $1,500 buy-in Seven Card Stud High-Low tournament.
Sexton recently re-signed with PartyPoker and will serve as the ambassador for the world's fourth largest online poker site in Las Vegas during the WSOP.
Annette Obrestad has already expressed her intent to vote for Sexton saying, "I may be from a different generation of poker players to Mike, but in my mind he deserves induction into poker's hall of fame this year." Also lobbying for Sexton is Irish poker pro Padraig Parkinson.
Sexton's accomplishments also include winning the first $10k buy-in championship event at the Foxwoods World Poker finals in 1992, and being the first American to win the Euro Finals of Poker in 2000. In 2006 he also won the WSOP Tournament of champions and donated $500,000 of his winnings to charity (incidentally, Sexton is one of the founders of the Tournament of Champions of Poker).
Sexton is also tied with Chris Bjorin, with 44 cashes at the WSOP, for the 11th most all-time cashes. He has also appeared at poker trials around the United States serving as an expert poker witness. He recently testified in the Mount Pleasant trial in South Carolina supporting how poker is a game of skill by using hands that played out on the WPT circuit.
Last year, poker pro Dewey Tomko and hole card camera inventor Henry Orenstein joined the Poker Hall of Fame in a special ceremony during the WSOP Main Event final table.
Other Poker Hall of Fame members include T.J. Cloutier, Puggy Pearson, Johnny Chan, Stu Ungar, WPT Founder Lyle Berman, Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Bobby Baldwin, Jack Binion, and Johnny Moss. Two industry members have been enshrined every year since 2002; Barbara Enright and Ultimate Bet's Phil Hellmuth were inducted in 2007.
The Hall of Fame class of 2009 will be inducted in November when the WSOP Main Event final table plays out.
