Poker Legend Hellmuth Comes up Short in bid for 12th Bracelet

by PokerPages.com
Wed, Jul 2nd, 2008 @ 12:00am

Not one, but three poker tables were up and running to start Day Three of Event 51, $1,500 HORSE. Day Two ended in the early morning hours with 20 players remaining, rather than the target of eight. After another full day at the tables, WSOP newbie James Schaaf was the last player standing.

The story heading into the final table was the end of Day Two chip leader. Phil Hellmuth was in charge of the big stack to start the day.

James SchaafRailbirds gathered early as Phil looked poised to increase his bracelet collection to an even dozen pieces. Hellmuth was second only to Tommy Hang in the chip counts by the time the eight-handed final table was carved. After just a few levels, play was four-handed with Phil sitting on the short stack. He would manage to outlast Esther Rossi, but couldn't escape Hang during a hand of Omaha-8 and was out in third.

Tommy Hang entered heads-up play with a 2-1 chip advantage over James Schaaf. After dragging a couple of nice Razz and Stud-Hi pots, Schaaf had pulled even. Schaaf then went on a big run, taking the chip lead all the way up to 5-1, before putting Hang away playing Stud-8. Hang picked up trip sevens on 6th street and got the rest of his chips in. Schaaf picked up trip eights on the same street and wasn't going anywhere. Hang couldn't squeeze a pair on the river and his day was over.

This was Schaaf's first time even visiting the WSOP. At many points in the tournament, Schaaf found himself dangerously close to the felt. In the end, Phil may have stole the show, but Schaaf overcame the odds and a tough final table to earn his first bracelet and a nice chunk of change.

Final table results:

  • 1st... $256,412... James Schaaf
  • 2nd... $158,933... Tommy Hang
  • 3rd... $93,168... Phil Hellmuth
  • 4th... $68,505... Esther Rossi
  • 5th... $54,804... Jason Dollinger
  • 6th... $42,966... Sam Silverman
  • 7th... $32,992... Victor Ramdin
  • 8th... $27,511...Matt Grapenthien
