Poker Player Rousso for Washington State Governor!Mon, Jan 28th, 2008 @ 12:00am Lee Rousso, an avid poker player and attorney, is running for Governor in the State of Washington, USA, and is aiming to unseat incumbent Governor Christine Gregoire using the removal of the state law that made online gambling a Class C felony as his key issue. In March 2006, Governor Gregoire signed a law making online gambling illegal in the state of Washington, where offenders receive the same Class C felony penalty as child pornography, stalking, drive by shootings, threatening the governor, family abandonment, heroin possession and unauthorized abortions. Persons convicted of such a Class C felony face a maximum of 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. It is the only state within the United States with such a stiff penalty. Rousso says, even if he loses the Democratic nomination for governor in the upcoming August primary, his real goal is to get this objectionable gambling law stricken from the books. He is not considered Governor Gregoire's main competitor. Dino Rossi, who Governor Gregoire just narrowly beat in 2004 after two recounts, is considered the governor's strongest contender. ROUSSO ALREADY IS FIGHTING THE BAN Rousso, who is also Washington state representative to the Poker Players Alliance, filed a complaint against the ban last July, claiming that the ban on Internet poker is a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution' commerce clause, which prohibits individual states from enacting laws that discriminate against interstate businesses. He also noted that the ban doesn't put the state in compliance with the Federal Wire Act as it claims to do. He claims that instead, it protects Washington's own in-state gambling industry, which includes live card rooms and casinos that contribute to state revenues. "You just can't even find people who think that this law is a good idea. Even people who are opposed to gambling in general recognize that this law goes way, way, way too far," noted Rousso. EVEN THE GOVERNOR BETS Even the Governor herself has violated the no gambling law, when she openly bet against the governors of North Carolina and Pennsylvania in the Seahawks '06 Super Bowl run. "Under SB 6613, the state can kick down your door in the middle of the night and haul you off to prison for five years for committing the 'crime' of playing poker on the internet. And while you are rotting away in prison, the state can steal your house and throw your family out on the street," Rousso pointed out. "Really, who knew the Taliban had so much influence, and so far from home?" Get more information about, or find out how to make contributions to Rousso's campaign at leeroussoforgovernor.org.
