Poker SuperStar Phil Hellmuth Crashes Racecar at RioMon, Jul 9th, 2007 @ 12:00am An UltimateBet promotional race car with poker superstar Phil Hellmuth at the wheel crashed into a cinderblock barrier at 172 mph during a show late Sunday evening at the Rio Hotel and Casino parking lot. A video of the crash was released showing a startled but unharmed but badly shaken Hellmuth getting out of his completely totaled vehicle. WickedChops first came out with the story and released the video through its sex-laden RawVegas.tv subsidiary. "The car sustained serious damage and (Phil) Hellmuth needs to consider re-taking driving lessons," Gambling911.com Senior Editor Payton O'Brien suggested. "He should never have been behind the wheel of that death trap," said a bystander who contacted Gambling911.com early Monday morning. They added, "The brakes appeared to have failed. Either that or he is going blind!" Thepokerbiz website was suspicious of the timing of the crash, saying, "We're not buying it though, as Hellmuth was seen leaving the Rio with a full wardrobe of UltimateBet gear freshly pressed and ready for action tomorrow." However, they did add, "Now, this could be a publicity stunt or it could be a legit car wreck and if that's the case we're certainly hoping he's okay. It's just something that Hellmuth might do to get himself a little bit more attention and drama as he heads to the felt tomorrow [July9]." The 11-time bracelet winner is expected to be well enough to play today at 12pm PST in Day 1d of the 2007 World Series of Poker.
