RGA Praises EC for Challenging Netherlands and Greece Gambling ProtectionismMon, Mar 3rd, 2008 @ 12:00am The Remote Gambling Association (RGA), Europe's largest trade association for the online gambling industry, applauded the European Commission's decision last week to issue warnings (Reasoned Opinions) against Greece and the Netherlands to ensure the countries are complying with EU directives that give EU-based operators, including online poker site operators, the free movement of goods and services between the 27 EU member countries. The two countries must now demonstrate to the Commission, the European Union's executive arm, that the restrictions they place on gambling operators wishing to provide services to residents in the Netherlands and Greece are justifiable under EU law, and were not created primarily to protect domestic gambling companies or state-supported operators. Clive Hawkswood, chief executive of the RGA said, "In the face of sometimes very strong opposition, it does the [European] Commission great credit that it continues to fulfill its role as guardian of the [EU] Treaty in such a robust and objective way." He added,"Coming on the heels of its decision in January to take similar action against Germany and Sweden, this should send a strong signal across Europe that protectionism in the gambling sector will not be tolerated." "The Dutch government has even tried to carve out an online gambling monopoly for Holland Casino, but this Opinion should serve notice that such actions are not acceptable," Hawkswood concluded. 10 of the 27 European Union states are under the Commission's microscope for monopolistic or protectionist practices that seek to prevent the free passage of trade and services between EU member nations. Most recently, the European Commission on January 31st gave Sweden and Germany two months to show how their protective measures against non-state supported poker games and tournaments are compatible with EU law (click here for related article).
