Russia's Duma proposes New Zones for Poker & Gambling

by PokerPages.com
Sat, Dec 16th, 2006 @ 12:00am

Yesterday, Russia's State Duma's Economic Policy Committee recommended four locations to the State Duma for approval as potential future gambling zones: Kaliningrad Region, Altai Republic, Primorie District and an area on border of Ruston Region and Krasnodar District, according to ITAR-TASS.

Back in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to toughen controls on gambling. Then mid November, the State Duma passed Putin's gambling bill in its first reading.

As reported earlier by PokerPages, Putin's bill proposes to concentrate Russia's gambling industry into four regional gaming colonies by 2009, ban Internet gambling, and re-impose state regulation over live gambling.

Currently, Russia's $6 billion gambling business boasts 56 casinos and 5,000 slot halls with some 56,000 slot machines. Another 9,000 slot machines can be found on the streets.

Putin' gambling bill proposes that all current gambling activity be moved into state-controlled gambling zones. No more than four of these gambling zones can be created, under current Russian law.

The location of these four gambling zones are very far apart, and not in particularly populated areas.

For us geography-challenged folks, the Kaliningrad Region borders Poland to the south, Lithuania to the northeast, and the Baltic Sea to the west.

The Altai Republic borders Kazakhstan to the southwest, and Mongolia to the southeast. The Primorie District borders China to the west, and the Japanese Sea to the east.

The border of the Rostov Region and Krasnodar District has the Ukraine to its west.

Also of significance is that the Economic Policy Committee proposed to the State Duma to extend when casinos are transferred to the new gambling zones by 6 months, until July 1, 2009, as reported by RIA Novosti .
