Seats in Foreign Poker Tourneys not OK says UK Gambling CommissionTue, Dec 18th, 2007 @ 12:00am UK gambling licensees were told by the UK Gambling Commission last week that they cannot offer prizes, such as seats in a poker event, that are located outside the Commission-approved white listed areas because it violates the Gambling Act of 2005 since it essentially is advertising a non-UK approved event. "Unless the overseas tournament is based in the European Economic Area, Gibraltar, or in white-listed jurisdictions, the advert is likely to amount to the advertising of "foreign gambling", which constitutes an offence under section 331 of the Gambling Act 2005," a UK Gambling Commission spokesperson said. The Gambling Commission has so far approved adding only two gaming jurisdictions outside of the European Economic area onto their 'White List' which means they are allowed to advertise within the UK: the Isle of Man and Alderney (click here for related article). They were the only jurisdictions found to have a "rigorous licensing regime designed to stop children gambling, protect vulnerable people, keep games fair and keep out crime" as specified by the 2005 Gambling Act. The European Economic Area (EEA) includes Gibraltar and Malta where a number of online gambling sites are licensed. They automatically qualify to advertise in Britain under European law.
