Senate Delays Holland Casino Internet Gambling VoteFri, Feb 8th, 2008 @ 12:00am In a move likely to avoid incuring the ire of the European Commission (EC), the Dutch senate on Tuesday delayed a vote on allowing state gambling monopoly holder Holland Casino to set up an internet gambling site, at the request of justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin, reports Dutch News.nl. The EC has recently stepped up the pressure on governments with gaming monopolies to bring them into compliance with EU directives that give EU-based operators the free movement of goods and services between the 27 EU member countries (Article 49 of the EC Treaty). Most recently the EC warned Sweden and Germany that they will soon face the European Court of Justice if they do not change their protectionist policies (click here for related article). LAST YEAR'S DEAL TO GO ONLINE Canadian gambling software provider CryptoLogic at this time last year announced they had entered into a three-year contract to provide online poker and casino software to Holland Casino, the government-licensed land casino operator in the Netherlands, to offer only to residents of the Netherlands. Holland Casino was to use the deal to expand into the online market. Holland Casino currently operates 14 land-based casinos across the Netherlands, including those at the popular tourist resorts of Zandvoort, Valkenburg and Scheveningen. Five further casino applications have been submitted, according to their website.
