South Carolina Poker Raid Nabs Prosecutor

by PokerPages.com
Tue, Apr 8th, 2008 @ 12:00am

Police in Charleston County, South Carolina USA announced the confiscation of approximately $40,000 in a poker raid on a home organizing regular poker games, and the arrest of 27 citizens including a prosecutor for 3 SC counties. Poker is illegal in SC under a 200-year-old state law that prohibits dice and card games.

The arrests principally took place in the home of Martin and Dawn Reyes.

Strangely, there are some conflicting claims about the poker games and investigation.

Authorities claim the raid was the culmination of a ten month long investigation, and that the Reyes organized the games as a business with employees.

"This isn't boys' poker night out," Charleston County sheriff's Maj. John Clark said. "This isn't just friends getting together and playing poker for a quarter or a dollar. This was an organized poker operation in which they had people in positions who were acting as employees. They were being paid to do their jobs."

Dawn Reyes told The Post and Courier that her husband began hosting the games about eight months ago, and that the players were friends and her husband was not paid.

PROSECUTOR NETTED IN RAID

Among those arrested was Don Sorenson, a long-serving prosecutor for the state with responsibilities in the Calhoun, Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. After being charged with unlawful games and betting, he tendered his resignation to his chief, David Pascoe. The chief prosecutor decided instead to suspend Sorenson without pay, taking into consideration his 13 year of service with the office.

Reports on the raid were not clear on the fate of the other arrested players, although the police said they anticipated making further arrests in the case.

"This is a magistrate level offense," Clark told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg. "I do not have a court date and time yet."

SOUTH CAROLINA BILL TO MAKE POKER LEGAL ALREADY SUBMITTED

An 200 year old state law prohibits dice and card games, thus making poker illegal in SC.

Last year, state Rep. Wallace Scarborough, R-Charleston, introduced a bill to make playing poker legal as long as the house does not take a cut. That bill was sent to committee and no action has been taken on it to date (click here for related article).
