Several sites watch online poker room traffic and stats while others monitor live poker tournaments data as ways to measure the health of the poker industry, but both indicate that 2007 was a record-breaking year and that online poker has come roaring into 2008 promising that more records will be shattered.

ONLINE POKER ACTION

According to PokerScout.com, the combined real money traffic of all the online poker rooms they monitor exceeded the 95,000 mark on January 7th, where a new high had been set only a few days before. The same day, four poker sites also broke their own records.

Here are some of the recent firsts, in real money ring game players that the site reported:

  • LIVE TOURNAMENT ACTION MEASURED

On the live tournament front, PokerPages.com maintains several Poker Industry Indices, together called the PokerPages Industry Index (PPII). The indices are based on data collected since 2002.

The Buy-in Index measures changes in total poker tournament buy-in dollars. For example, December 2007 shows a 20% growth over December 2006.

The PPII also includes two other measures: the Entrants Index, which measures changes in the number of tournament entries in the month (for example, it shows a decline of 10% Dec. 2007 vs. Dec.2006), and the Average Buy-In per Entry Index, which measures changes in the average buy-in stakes for tournaments (Dec. 2007 shows a 34% growth over Dec.2006). Together they provide additional insight into what is driving changes in the poker industry.

    POKER'S POPULARITY CONTINUES INTO 2008

Both online and live statistics indicate that the popularity of poker continues to grow, despite protectionist legislations and bans. This could be why top top search term on Lycos for the second year running is POKER!
