Texas Poker Act Gets Full House Vote Next Week

by PokerPages.com
Wed, May 2nd, 2007 @ 12:00am

The Texas House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee approved the Texas Poker Act bill that would allow poker gambling at licensed public establishments as well as charitable poker for qualified groups, with taxable revenue going back to state coffers.

The Texas Poker Act, or House Bill 3186 (HB 3186) as it is officially known, was filed by Representative Jose Menendez (D) of San Antonio, who said, "Poker could bring in millions of dollars in tourism and television instead of being a law enforcement liability."

HB 386 tasks the Texas Lottery Commission to issue licenses and provide oversight of certain related activities including where poker tables would be allowed, such as at bars or race tracks. They would also oversee regulation of charitable poker events.

However, the bill does not address online poker playing, only live play.

The bill now goes to the full House for a vote next week.

This will be the first time serious regulation of poker has reached the House in Texas, and poker advocates are working hard to support the bill.

One well organized advocate is Mike Lavigne, treasurer of the Texas Poker Political Action Committee, a grassroots organization created to encourage legal, safe and accessible poker in Texas.

On his informative website that tracks the bill's progress, Lavigne encourages all Poker-loving Texans to contact their Texas State Representatives to let them know you support the Texas Poker Act.

He also provides a link to a search tool to find who your State Representative is- click here to go to the search tool.
