UIGEA Congressional Hearing Scheduled for April 2nd

by PokerPages.com
Sun, Mar 30th, 2008 @ 12:00am

The long-awaited Congressional hearing for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) will take on April 2nd at 10 a.m. EST from the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington. The hearing is titled "Proposed UIGEA Regulations: Burden without Benefit?" and will be overseen by Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL).

This hearing marks the first chance to examine the UIGEA, which was quickly passed as part of the SAFE Port Act, before many Congressman had the chance to read it. Since the UIGEA showed up in 2006, the American banking business has had nothing but problems.

Among the alternatives to the UIGEA are Rep. Barney Frank's (D-MA) Internet Gambling Regulations Enforcement Act (IGREA), Rep. Robert Wexler's proposed exception for skill games and Rep. Pete McDermott's (D-WA) Internet Gambling Restriction and Taxation Enforcement Act (IGRTEA) are also options. Frank's IGREA would work to regulate online gaming, weeding out underage users and help problem gamblers. Wexler's Skill Game Protection ACt states that Poker, along with chess and mah-jongg, should be exempt, as in such games you can possess certain amounts of skill, reducing the amount of gamble. McDermott's IGRTEA resembles Frank's IGREA, but with added taxation information, so the U.S. would see millions in taxed dollars stay inside the borders.

A live broadcast of the Congressional hearing will be offered by the Poker Players Alliance. Webcast information is available at pokerplayersalliance.org.
