World Poker Association Changes Membership Terms

by PokerPages.com
Wed, Jul 16th, 2008 @ 12:00am

The new leadership under Founder and present Chairman of the World Poker Association (WPA), Jesse Jones, has taken immediate measures to address the needs of the over 1400 members who have joined the WPA to date, through several key membership changes. These changes include:

  • All Founding Members are made Lifetime WPA members
  • Reducing the Associate Member rate from $100 to the original $50
  • Reinstating the Affiliate (any poker related entity) category
  • Bringing back the Friend category at $20 (individual supporters)
  • One-time fee: Any member (Professional, Associate, Affiliate, Friend) who has already joined, joins now or in the future will pay a one time rate and not be required to renew on an annual basis; and becomes a permanent WPA member.
  • The WPA highly values the initial and ongoing support of the individuals and organizations that have joined the WPA. The primary purpose of the WPA has been and will always be to address tournament poker player's rights.

Small steps have been made the past year by holding the first WPA satellite event at the 2008 WSOP with nine-handed starting tables and other activities. The mission of the WPA is to promote tournament poker as a professional sport and create economic opportunities for the players. In a nutshell, be the PGA of poker.

The tournament poker player today for the most part remains outside the receipt of revenue from other sources (sponsors, television, ancillary revenue) generated via their participation in events. In most or all events they put in all of the prize money via the buy-in, have 6-10% of their money taken out, and a small number of participants make a payday.

In the coming months Jesse Jones and the WPA will seek specific arrangements with entities that will change the present reality of tournament poker worldwide. Watch your email box for the monthly newsletter or go to www.wpapoker.org for current updates.
