World Series of Poker Europe Wraps Day 1A of the Main Event

Sun, Sep 28th, 2008 @ 12:00am

Some 159 hopefuls made their way to the Empire Casino in London, England, Saturday afternoon for Day 1A of the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, presented by Betfair. The GBP 10,000 price tag and 20,000 starting stacks attracted some of the biggest names in the world to try their hand at the WSOPE Main Event bracelet and the GBP 1 million ($1.8 million USD) 1st-place prize.

The star-studded field included the likes of former Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Joe Hachem, Patrik Antonius, Mike Matusow, Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, David Benyamine and Erica Schoenberg. "November Nine" members Scott Montgomery, Ivan Demidov, Peter Eastgate and Craig Marquis also made use of their 117 days of Main Event downtime to take in the London scenery.

Not all was well for the big names. Lederer and Benyamine were among the first to fall. Lederer had his aces cracked by pocket sixes after his opponent flopped a set. Benyamine ran a couple of big cards into the aces of Andy Bloch, earning his elimination. Joining them on the rail were November Niners Eastgate and Marquis, who each left early in Day 1A. Ivey and Antonius would outlast Lederer and Benyamine, but that's about it, as the high-stakes duo won't be back for Day 2.

American Jason Mercier was hoping to continue his torrid run through European tournaments. He followed up an EPT San Remo win with a Barcelona Open final table. The Floridian was also chip leader in Event 3, PLO, before being rivered by eventual winner Theo Jorgensen's quads. Mercier would again fall on the river, this time to Andy Black. Mercier ran his A-Q into Black's K-K in a battle of the blinds. Mercier found an ace to take the lead, but would be banished to the rail after Black found a cowboy on 5th street.

The story of the day was Justin 'BoostedJ' Smith. The online pro had to share the felt with both Andy Bloch and Eli Elezra, but stil managed to amass a healthy chip lead. Smith was the first player to join the century club, topping 100,000 chips. Just before the end of the night, Smith would push his stack over the 150,000 mark. The second largest stack, belonging to Erik Sagstrom, is more than 60,000 chips behind the 'BoostedJ'. But Smith will have his work cut out for him in Day 2. Not only with he have all of the Day 1B survivors to deal with, but with names like Andy Bloch, Brandon Adams and Mike Matusow and a couple of the November Nine guys sitting behind big stacks, the 20-year-old will have his work cut out for him.
