World Series of Poker Event 23: Nick Schulman Wins First WSOP Bracelet

Sat, Jun 13th, 2009 @ 12:00am

Ninety-six of the world's most accomplished poker players payed $10,000 for their shot at becoming the No Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw World Champion After three days of shrewd poker, Nick Schulman took home the title and the bracelet.

Early on Day 3, Roland de Wolfe and Justin "BoostedJ" Smith were eliminated to set the final table. Michael Binger and David Benyamine began the final table extremely short and finished in 8th and 7th places. Vince Musso began the day as chip leader but was on a steady slide downward, ultimately succumbing in 6th place. Musso has one previous World Series cash. He finished 3rd in this event in 1979. Gambling Legend Archie Karas followed Musso out in 5th place. John Juanda took home 4th, and Steve Sung busted in 3rd to leave Schulman heads-up with Ville Wahlbeck.

Many final tables have included several bracelet winners, but this group featured two people who have already won bracelets this year. Wahlbeck won the $10,000 Mixed event, and Sung conquered the enormous field that came out for the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em stimulus special.

After being the short stack for much of the final table, Schulman gained a lead on Wahlbeck that he never relinquished. Frustrated, Wahlbeck bluffed all-in with a paired hand, and Schulman, having drawn Number One, was more than happy to call and secure his tournament victory. The 24 year-old from New York has a WPT title and a WPT second place finish on his resume already, but until now was missing a WSOP bracelet. Schulman adds $279,742 and some World Series hardware to his more than $3.5 million career tournament earnings.
