World Series of Poker Event 51: Carsten Joh Wins Sold Out NLHE EventTue, Jun 30th, 2009 @ 12:00am Carsten Joh defeated a sellout crowd to win his first bracelet in the penultimate $1,500 No Limit Hold'em event of 2009. Joh beat Andrew Chen heads up to bring home Germany's first bracelet of the Series. The event began with a largely amateur crowd, and the big names that made it to Day 2 quickly found themselves on the sidelines. Men Nguyen, Tony Cousineau, and Matt Brady outlasted most of the field but failed to make it to Day 3. The starting field was so large that 30 players were still in the hunt for the final table on the third day of the event. Alex Jacob began the day short on chips and finished in 21st place. It was past 8:00 pm by the time the final table got underway. Nathan Page was the first to be eliminated. Nathan Helder began the final table as chip leader, but after losing a confrontation with another big stack, Helder hit the rail in 8th place. Georgios Kapalas, the reigning Greek Poker Tour champion, finished in 7th. Frenchman Thibaut Durand, who has two EPT final tables on his resume, busted in 6th place, followed by Canadian Owen Crowe. Crowe finished 8th in a No Limit preliminary event last year and has numerous online scores, but his largest cash was $463,000 for 15th place in the 2009 Main Event. Steven Levy busted shortly after Crowe and was quickly followed by 21-year old David Walasinski. Beginning heads up, Andrew Chen found himself out of the lead for the first time in hours. Though Chen had most of the chips during three and four-handed play, Carsten Joh took over the lead and gradually wore down Chen. After an hour of chipping away at Chen's stack, Joh finished the job and captured his first bracelet and the first place prize of $664,426. Prior to this event, Joh's best tournament finish was 7th place in the 2008 Irish Open. Chen, who finished 3rd in an EPT in 2008, earns $412,632 for 2nd place. This is his 3rd cash of the Series. Both say they'll be back in a few days to see if their luck holds for the Main Event. For full final table coverage click here.
