World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table to Play Out on Nov 9Thu, May 1st, 2008 @ 12:00am USA Today announced to increase the drama and media pull, that play of the final table of the World Series of Poker will be delayed 117 days, from the targeted time on July 14 when the final nine players are determined until Nov 9th when play resumes. In the past, Main Event play was concluded continuously, and a tape-delayed telecast happened later in November on ESPN. This year, the Main Event's final table will resume play on Nov. 11, with a two-hour taped and edited telecast of the final table set for 9 p.m. that night on ESPN. Jeffrey Pollack, WSOP commissioner, says the new format allows for an "almost virtually real time" telecast. "This is no different than the final chapter of American Idol or The Apprentice. It's about building interest and excitement for the final chapter of this story," says Pollack. The WSOP says its 15-member Player Advisory Council was consulted on the switch. "It's going to create way more buzz. ..It's going to be more like a live event," says Daniel Negreanu, a council member who applauds the move. A gap of 117 days raises some interesting dynamics and questions. - If you made the final table, imagine having all that time to study the style of play of the other eight players. Could enough study and coaching during the 117 day gap change what would have been the outcome of the WSOP if it were played with no gap? Daniel Negreanu told USA Today that the gap will make for a "different dynamic" at the final table, saying, "You're going to see some really kind of more sophisticated play." Take that as a 'yes'. - Will the advertising and media hype around the final 9 players get old before November 9th rolls around? The time gap will certainly allow time to get to know the final nine better. Regarding commercialization, two-time Main Event champion Johnny Chan told USA Today that the new format will allow players to connect with sponsors who "come to them and say, 'Hey, wear this patch or wear this logo. We'll give you X amount of dollars.' " - What will that much time do to the psyche of the final 9 players? No problem, Chan told USA Today. He welcomes the WSOP's move to delay the final table to facilitate a Nov. 11 ESPN telecast within hours of the tournament's finish. "Poker is a game of skill. The hands are random. .. It's how you play your hand. I don't believe in hot streaks," he added. - What if one or two of the final nine cannot make it on Nov 9, say due to a car accident, illness, or even death (some great players are not exactly spring chickens). Well, the rules are pretty clear- any missing player would be blinded off. For many, it would not be a satisfying way to beat an opponent.
More details will be available after a press conference to be held today at 11am. Read Related Article:
