WPT Canada to Air on Rogers Sportsnet Beginning September 1st

by PokerPages.com
Sat, Aug 30th, 2008 @ 12:00am

Have no fear, poker fans to the north. Next week, the World Poker Tour (WPT) will air the first of four episodes of WPT Canada. The series, which will air on Rogers Sportsnet, is the first WPT series dedicated solely to Canadian events.

The program will be hosted by Jim Van Horne, a veteran Canadian sports announcer, and Poker Pages' own "Cowboy" Kenna James. Beggining September 1st, episodes will air on Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet Pacific.

The four episodes were collected from the Canada Coast to Coast Poker Championships, a seven-event series held at the River Rock Casino in Vancouver, BC. The series will debut with the first of two episodes dedicated to the $1,000 Bounty Event final table. A total of 439 players showed up for the event, creating a $92,120 first-place prize. Brad "Yukon" Booth, Gavin Smith, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari and "Cowboy" Kenna James were among the names with bounties on their heads.

The other episodes will feature the Coast to Coast Main Event final table. The $3,000 Main Event attracted 302 players, good for nearly $850,000 in the prize pool and $224,100 to the winner.

While the event seemed to fall a little short of targeted numbers, many would still call the Coast to Coast Poker Championship a success. The WPT was hoping to see 2,650 players show up, creating a $2.4 million prize pool. Instead, just under 2,000 entries were sold, creating a $1.6 million prize pool. Had the Main Event sold out, the winner would have been guaranteed $377,300, rather than the $224,100 that was actually awarded.

The announcement of WPT Canada comes on the heels of a stressful summer for WPTE. The WPT flagship show was homeless for a while after GSN gave up on the program after one year. WPTE eventually found a home for WPT Season VII on FSN in late July. Just last week, NASDAQ issued a warning to WPTE stating that if their share price continued to close below $1, that they could be delisted.
