WSOP Harrah's Tunica Circuit Down to Nine Poker Players
Tue, Feb 3rd, 2009 @ 12:00am
Day 2 of the first WSOP Circuit Championship event of 2009 saw 27 players returning to battle for the gold ring and almost $200,000. Only three hours later, they were down to the final nine and called it a night.
'Captain' Tom Franklin was the first notable departure. He tangled with Matt Stout's growing stack and lost two hands and all his chips. The Captain set sail in 21st-place, just three spots away from the money.
Jordan Morgan got his last chips in with middle pair, only to find that his opponent held top pair. Jordan was busted in 20th place, just two shy of the money.
Kathy Liebert, the last woman sitting, busted out in 19th place but due to round-for-round play, she will share 18th-place prize money with Va Shon Watkins, who busted out next.
Players were already jumping ship like rats leaving a sinking galleon, but when they hit the money the pace of departures actually increased. Stout continued to build his stack, assisting several players in hastening their departure.
When down to the final ten players, Gavin Smith got his chips in the middle with pocket 8s. He got action from a player with pocket 3s and it appeared that Gavin was headed for a double-up, but a 3 hit the flop giving his opponent a set. Gavin Smith ended up in 10th-place, earning $14,718.
With his elimination, the final table was set. Action gets underway at 2 p.m. central time on Wednesday. Stout leads the pack with almost one-third of the chips in play. Here are the final table players:
Here's a reminder of what they're playing for:
*The winner will also receive a $10k seat in the 2009 WSOP (with $1,000 in travel money) and the gold circuit championship ring.
