In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Holland Casinos and the 10th Anniversary of the Master Classics of Poker, PokerPages would like to invite you to meet one of the core people who help make the poker world in Holland such a great experience. Meet Adele Elisabeth Bruijn, Tournament Manager, Table Manager and Public Relations ambassador for the casino. First, some background information:
Poker Pages: What do you enjoy most about your current position? Adele Bruijn: The contact with the players and helping the new dealers grow into good dealers. PP: What do you find challenging about your current position? AB: I respect the players and I like having them respect me. PP: What other facilities are offered at The Holland Casino: AB: We have a full range, including:
AB: Yes, I play poker and my favorite game is Limit Texas Hold’em. PP: What are your poker achievements? AB: I have played in the WSOP/Ladies tournament PP: How do you feel the industry has changed over the past 5 years? AB: The poker industry in Europe has been booming the last 5 years and in my opinion is still growing. There seems to be more young people playing and doing quite well. PP: How would you like to see poker in the future? AB: As European poker grows, we see more European players in Vegas and vice versa. The future is good for poker as long as the casinos still see poker as business (be aware it is a revenue stream). Our poker room is doing very well and our weekly tournament on Tuesday is becoming bigger and bigger and famous in Europe. PP: What can the players and casinos do to help achieve their goals? AB: The most important factor is to listen to each other. Listening and acting on poker players' needs is paramount. PP: What else would you recommend poker players do while visiting Amsterdam? AB: Amsterdam is a great city for relaxing. The casino opens at 1pm and closes at 3am. There are many things to do in Amsterdam. The Rijks museum, The Nachtwacht and The Van Gogh museum are all walking distance from the casino. There are canal boats to enjoy, and of course the beautiful flowers and tulips that Holland is known for. PP: What makes The Holland Casino special? AB: There are eleven official casinos in the Netherlands, and one by one, they are becoming places with an international allure. These casinos are operated by and take the name of Holland Casino. They set themselves apart from other places that call themselves "casinos" because only Holland Casinos are legal. These casinos are characterized by an honest and broad variety of games offered in surroundings that are unblemished and full of atmosphere as well as well-trained personnel and attentive service. A wide range of entertainment, including restaurants, cafes and bars provide for relaxation in addition to the excitement and tension generated by the games and the Jackpot Clubs. Approximately 3,800 Holland Casino employees receive more than 5 million visitors per year. PP: What date is the 10th Anniversary of the Master Classics, and when are you celebrating your 25th Anniversary of being in business? AB: The celebration will be the first week of November for the Master Classics and in October for our overall anniversary. During the Master Classics of Poker, if people enter for the minimum of 3 tournaments, they can play a free roll tournament. We give 10 tickets away for our biggest event, “The Lido Dutch Open” on Wednesday, November 7th. All players receive free lunch and dinner vouchers along with free drinks. PP: Tell us a little about how you got involved in the poker industry. AB: Nine years ago I knew nothing about poker. I took a course on dealing and obtained a position at the Holland Casino as a dealer. Three years ago I was promoted to Assistant Poker Manager. After that, I moved on to Tournament Manager, Table Manager and Public Relations. I absolutely love my job. PP: How many Master Classics have you been involved with? AB: In the past 10 years, I have been lucky enough to be involved in 8 of them. The first year there were only 5 tables competing, and last year we had 22. It has been wonderful watching the growth and popularity of the tournament. PP: Where was the first Holland casino that opened its doors 25 years ago? AB: The first casino on the boulevard in Zandvoort, right on the beach. It has once again been completely rebuilt. The second establishment was built in Valkenburg. In May of 1988, this establishment moved to a completely new building. The next casino, the largest on the West European coast, was founded in the Kurhaus in Scheveningen. In the middle of 1995, this casino moved to a new location on the Kurhausweg, directly across from the old establishment. Somewhat smaller and architecturally distinctive casinos were built in Breda, Groningen and Nijmegen. The Holland Casino in Amsterdam is located in the reconstructed Lido complex close to the Leidseplein, and the Holland Casino in Rotterdam is situated in the Plaza complex across from the central train terminal. With the opening of the Holland Casino in Eindhoven in June 1993, the ninth Holland Casino came into being. The tenth establishment was opened in April 1995 at Schiphol Airport, the first casino in the world located in an airport. Finally, the construction of still one more casino is planned for Enschede. Holland Casino delivers know-how and management for setting up total casino operations. PP: Which is your favorite tournament and why? AB: I think the Lido Dutch Open is my favorite. Even though I am unable to participate in any of the tournaments, this tournament holds some unique qualities. One of the things I find particularly interesting and exciting is the Super Satellite structure. One hour prior to the Open, there are one hand satellites. I have never seen this anywhere else. It is fun to watch a table play one hand and one person get a seat. PP: If you cannot play in Holland, where do you go? AB: Usually a group of us go on a road trip to neighboring countries and enjoy a great game of poker. One place we do get to play is the Mikohn Open which is a large tournament at the Nifmegen club provided for dealers only. PP: We at PokerPages want to wish you at the Holland Casinos a wonderful 25th anniversary and a very successful 10th anniversary of the Master Classics in November.
