NewJane Interviews ARTHUR DENT, a Top PSO Finisher of the Big One Final TableNewJane: First, let me congratulate you on your fine finish at the Big One Final table tourney! Your accomplishment has guaranteed you a seat in the PSO LIVE TOUR Final event in Tunica in January. Tell us a little about yourself. Where you live, etc. Any interesting facts about your life would be appreciated! ARTHUR DENT: My name is Gary Edqvist I will be 40 years old soon and I live in Sweden. I came originally from Gothembourg but now I live out in the countryside about 100km from Gothembourg. I Have a girlfriend and two children, a daughter who is 12 and a son who is 11 years old and both of them play poker. We play mostly 5 card draw. NewJane: Share with us some of your poker background, such as how long you have played, games of choice, limits you like when you play live, other tourney successes. And anything else about your poker background that you want to share. ARTHUR DENT: I work as a network technician for our local council. I began to play serious by the end of the 80's at a few different places in Gothembourg. Lateley I have played several tournaments at the casino in Gothembourg (about 10)and ended up "in the money" in about half of them. I prefer no limit games but I occassionally play a low limit cash game. NewJane: How long have you been a member of PSO? ARTHUR DENT: I have been a member since 21 Nov 2001. NewJane: Where is your favorite place to play poker, both live and tourney action? ARTHUR DENT: I have not played enough to say that I have a favourite place either live or on-line. It would be pokerschool in which case. NewJane: What were some hands you remember from the tourney, both won and lost? ARTHUR DENT: Can't remeber any special hand. On several occasions I have had some good cards and played aggressively, but more often I've had nothing to lay down which is probably fortunate. Those times I've lost it felt like I haven't given my all or got myself into a pot that I should not have been. One learns from these things too. NewJane: What did you feel was your strengths and weaknesses in the tournament? ARTHUR DENT: My weakness in this as well as other tournaments shows itself when I lose nmoney uneccesarily. Then I get a bit uncertain and begin to lose confidence in myself and others. This happened in the beginning of the tournament and after about 1 hour I was under 7000 just through sheer carelessness. After the second hour of the game things turned around and I was up to 30000 after my confidence became stronger and I felt more secure in the decisions I made. After a couple of successful turns the whole game became better. One can afford to take a few chances and make mistakes NewJane: If you could play one hand over, which one would it be and why? ARTHUR DENT: That would be one of the AA hands that I had, one can play them again and again if it was possible to win with one. NewJane: What are some of the differences you see live and online play? ARTHUR DENT: I haven't played so many live tournaments yet so it's a bit difficult to compare, but there is a completeley different atmosphere when one plays live. It's much more interesting. NewJane: What are your feelings about what is going on with poker now, the incredible growth? Do you see it as a positive thing? ARTHUR DENT: For poker as a whole it's great, for poker in Sweden it's fantastic because it's not considered respectable here to even play. More and more people play here now and talk about it in a completely different way. Before people treated it as something that one's cat could have dragged in one rainy night. NewJane: What new poker game are you anxious to learn? ARTHUR DENT: I am trying to get to grips with Omaha which has been incredibly tricky in the past. NewJane: What poker books might I find in your home library? ARTHUR DENT: You won't find any books on my shelf that are about poker. I have other interests when it comes to books. I try to learn by playing as much as possible, - to get practical experience. I think people overestimate the possibilty of studying ones way to being a good poker player. Of course one needs to know the rules and the basics and perhaps what a certain person would have done in a certain situation, but for me that would only give a very theoretical picture of the game. While all this can be considered essential to other people, i just prefer practical experience. I know the basics and what each card is worth but I don't feel the need to know what a certain person would have done in a given situation. It is after all if one is honest mostly about chance? One comes to a certain level or boundry where how one should play, postion, money, hold the cards how much someone has laid down etc...when one aquires all of this, what is it that decides who is going to win? Skill ? Chance ? Crazyness or just plain daring? What I mean by this is "Texas holdem no-limit" and nothing else. Sorry if this offends somebody elses opinion of this game. NewJane: Anything I didn't ask you that you want to say, now is the time! ARTHUR DENT: When we began to play poker in town we had a game that had only 32 cards (from 7 to Ace). It was played like stud poker with either one or two dark cards, flush were worth more than Full House, otherwise there was no difference. Ace can be counted as a sequence A 7 8 9 10 and 10 J Q K A. It would be fun to see this type of poker in pokerschool. Good luck to you at the Live Tour Grand Final in Tunica and I look forward to meeting you in January! Thanks... NewJane
