NewJane Interviews LIEBE, Top PSO Finisher at the WPO Tunica 2004First, let me congratulate you on your fine finish in the Spring Big One Playoff. You are now qualified for the PSO LIVE TOUR FINAL EVENT in January 2005. NewJane: Tell us a little about yourself. Where you live, etc. Any interesting facts about your life would be appreciated! LIEBE: I live in Idaho, where I was taught to play by my Grandpa, who was a semi-pro. I am a writer, screenwriter, and avid guitarist who writes advertising copy during the day (and often night.) NewJane: Share with us some of your poker background, such as how long you have played, games of choice, limits you like to play, other tourney successes. Or anything about your poker background you want to share. LIEBE: I played live limit, mostly $3/$6 and $4/$8 at Cactus Pete's in Jackpot from 1993 to 1999. My first tournament was in 1999. I took 1st, so decided to try some more. In 2001, I decided to play some bigger tourneys such as the Reno Pot of Gold, as well as the Mirage and Orleans weekly tourneys. Then, in 2002, I started playing all over in tournaments. I suck at live poker overall. I prefer a start point and end point to limit the potential loss. NewJane: How long have you been a member of PSO? LIEBE: Since soon after it started. NewJane: Where is your favorite place to play, both live and tourney? LIEBE: Tourneys, I love to play at the Orleans. Live I like to play at the Reno Hilton. I want to try Europe as soon as possible, and now, I'll get to try Tunica. NewJane: What were some hands you remember from the tourney...both won and lost? LIEBE: Well, to qualify the week before I made it to the final table and woke up with KT spades in the big blind. No raise, so I checked it. The flop came 10 high with two diamonds. I bet about a quarter of my medium stack, and Jivamukti called with about the same percentage of his stack. A third diamond came on the turn (below a 10) and I checked and he checked. The river was a K, giving me two pair, but nevertheless, I checked because I suspected a flush. Jivamukti bet about 80% of my remaining chips and I agonized and then called. Sure enough, my two pair was beat by his flush. So I could only survive to 5th place in the BIG ONE. NewJane: What did you feel was your strength/weakness in the tournament? LIEBE: My strength was that I've finally found a good balance between risk and caution. My weakness was that I made that call against a potential flush on the board when I suspected it and could have waited for a more certain situation. NewJane: If you could play one hand over, which one would it be and why? LIEBE: The one I described. I would have folded even though I had two pair. But I don't really regret it because it was a perfect bluff opportunity for Jivamutki, and he could have been bluffing. NewJane: What are some differences you see between brick and mortar casino play and online play? LIEBE: Being able to watch, listen use your collective intuition about visual and audible clues. Being able to act and do fake outs and such. Having a table image based on your persona, etc. NewJane: What are your feelings about what is going on in poker now, the incredible growth? Do you see it as a positive thing? LIEBE: Yes. But more suckouts by players who don't know better that to take a poor risk-reward scenario. NewJane: What poker books might I find in your home library? LIEBE: All the Sklansky stuff, Doyle Brunson's Super System, TJ Cloutier's book on No Limit, Zen and the Art of Poker, Caro's Book of Tells, and Amarillo Slim's classic, etc. NewJane: If there is anything I didn't ask you that you want to say, now is the time! LIEBE: I love Poker School and PokerPages. They have more integrity and quality than the other sites. NewJane: Thank you for taking time to talk with me, and Good luck in Tunica!!
