NewJane Interviews Oceanpup, one of the final four from the BIG ONE final table.

NewJane: Congratulations on your excellent finish at the Live Tour event! Tell us about the event that qualified you for the Live Tour Final in 2007.

Oceanpup: Nice days are a rare thing in Minnesota. Sometimes I think the more you want something, the less likely you are to get it. I remember thinking I wish I could either hurry up and win or hurry up and win, or bust out so I can go play outside. I did neither. I made it to the final table and needed to play the 10-person satellite to make the live tour.

The 10-person satellite was all about player dynamics. While I respect all the players that made it that day, some were easier to read than others. This game had the added dimension of all the players' previous experience with each other at the first final table. An odd little strategy I employed was to get out of a pot with players who were at war. I may have had the best hand or a good draw, but in a seat tournament where the top four places are paid with no regard for chip stack or placement, the goal is to get people knocked out. If I, a person not in the war, am in a pot with the two warring parties, they are less likely to put chips in because I am an unknown element. They suddenly become a bit more conservative. Once the other parties folded, the two were free to try to out bluff each other with their entire stack. Of course if I had a good hand, I would play it, and would bluff if I knew a player was weak, but sitting back and letting others fight it out will occasionally be the best play.

NewJane: Tell us some interesting facts about your life, such as place of employment, family matters, hobbies, or educational background.

Oceanpup: I represent people with moldy houses.

NewJane: Give us a little glimpse into your poker background. How long have you played? Do you prefer online play or live? Where is your favorite place to play live? Do you like tournaments or ring games? What is your game of choice?

Oceanpup: Hold'em only, and I started in 2004 when I met thehazyone. However, I was on a bad run and very on tilt one night recently and decided to play a heads up Omaha game. I was a bit confused why my nut flush was no good, but once I figured out you have to use two hole cards, I won the match.

NewJane: How long have you been a member of PSO?

Oceanpup: I joined in 2004.

NewJane: What do you think was your greatest strength in the tourney? Your biggest weakness?

Oceanpup: Strength: reading others. Weakness: Letting my emotions get in the way! I recently made a huge mistake because I disliked the guy I was in a pot with. (He heckled the live women's tournament I played in, and I was not going to be bullied by that schmuck! Turned out he had the nuts.)

NewJane: Do you remember any key hands you want to tell us about? Positive or Negative outcomes?

Oceanpup: Anytime I can call and win a pot with Ace high because of a good read is worth much more than the chips.

NewJane: What are some of the differences you notice in online play as opposed to live play?

Oceanpup: Oh my God, they can see you! Personally, I find it much more difficult. I am less apt to take risks or trust my instincts. I will need to work on that at the convention!

NewJane: If you could have dinner with any current poker tourney pro, who would it be and what would be the question you would ask first?

Oceanpup: I am honestly not that interested. I met a few in Tunica last year, and they were pretty decent folks, but I really am not a star struck person. Oh wait- there is that Swedish guy that looks like Orlando Bloom!

NewJane: What poker books have helped your game?

Oceanpup: I think Poker is a very personal game, and none of the books I read were as good as the lessons I learned from thehazyone and the tacit knowledge I gained from playing at PSO. Can anyone learn to paint from a book? However, I loved Diary of a Mad Poker Player. It was very funny and was an accurate portrayal of internet poker life.

NewJane: What new poker games are you interested in learning?

Oceanpup: Omaha

NewJane: Here is your chance to address anything I neglected to ask that you are dying to share.

Oceanpup: I hope to see you all in Vegas! I will be there for the Women's WSOP event before the convention, and will also play the main event when I return later in July. As I mentioned, my live play needs some work, so I welcome any help from you all at the convention!

NewJane: Thanks for talking with us today, Oceanpup. Good luck in the Live Tour Grand Finale in 2007!
