Tony McCann Wins his First
Tournament in No-Limit Hold’em
Again today there were two tournaments scheduled, the first was a $1,060 No-limit Hold’em event that started at noon. The second was a $230 Seven-card Stud 8-or-Better event that began at 2 p.m.
Final table play began in the No-limit event at 7:00 p.m. with 32 minutes remaining in level 8 with a $75 ante and $300-$600 blinds.
Rick Juhasz, from Las Vegas was the chip leader with $24,200, Ram Vaswani was making his fifth appearance at a final table. He was in second place with $19,000, Tony McCann, from Las Vegas was in third place with $17,550, Minneapolis Jim, from Las Vegas was in fourth place with $12,675, Joe Ricci, from Arizona was in fifth place with $11,950, Frank Zavala, from Las Vegas was in sixth with $9,250, John Robertson, from Las Vegas was in seventh place with $6,950, Steve Walmsley, from Blackpool, England was in eighth place with $5,375, and Linda Jensen, from Danville, California was in last place with $4,875.
At 7:30 the remaining nine took a dinner break and play resumed at 8:30 with a $100 ante and $500-$1,000 blinds.
Rich and Ram were tied for the lead with $22,500 in chips and Steve with $3,400 and John Robertson with $5,300 were trailing and the other eight players were somewhere in between.
On the first hand after the dinner break Ram raised $2,500, Linda moved all-in for her remaining 9,900 and Ram called. Linda showed A-Q and Ram turned over pocket kings. Ram made a full house on the turn and Linda was sent home in 9th place with $1,775.
At 8:45 Jim moved all-in with pocket eights and Ram called with pocket rockets. The board was no help to Jim and he had to settle for an 8th place and $2,365.
Five minutes later John moved all-in for $6,000 with J-3 and Rick called with pocket rockets. John took $2,960 for his 7th place finish.
At 9:10 Steve moved all-in with J-9 and Joe called him with A-10. Steve flopped a straight draw but neither the turn or the river help his hand and he was forced to take a 6th place finish and pocketed $3,550.
At 9:15 Frank picked up K-10 and decided to move all-in and ran into Tony holding A-K. The board was no help to Frank and he was sent home in 5th place with $4,140.
At 9:20 the blinds increased to $800-$1,600 with a $200 ante.
The pot of the night happened at 9:30. Tony was the big blind, Ram raised $4,000, Joe reraised all-in for $11,300, Tony called , and Ram called. The flop came 2-6-J, Tony bet $4,000 and Ram folded. Joe showed pocket eights and Tony turned over pocket jacks for a set. Joe received no help on the turn or the river and had to settle for a 4th place finish and $4,735.
At 10: 20 the blinds rose to $1,000-$2,000 with a $300 ante.
At 10:35 Ram raised $8,000, Rick and Tony both called. The flop came Kc-4s-3s, Ram moved all-in for $19,300, Rick folded and Tony said, “Let’s play poker,” and called with A-6 of spades for the nut flush draw. Ram showed J-4 for a pair of fours. The turn card came a nine of clubs and as luck would have it the river came a deuce of spades. Ram had to settle for 3rd place and $6,510.
It was now heads-up between Tony and Rick with Tony in the lead with $75,000 to Rick’s $47,000.
At 10:55 Rick and Tony saw a flop of 6-2-10 and Rick bet $3,500, Tony moved all-in and Rick called. Rick showed 10-5 for top pair and Tony turned over 9-7 for a gut shot straight. The turn card came an eight and Rick was drawing dead to Tony’s straight. Rick had to settle for 2nd place and $12,425.
Tony was declared the winner and collected $20,710.
This was Tony’s first win in a Las Vegas tournament, he won his entry into today’s event in a one-table satellite last night. He did place 2nd 20 years ago in a low ball event at the Bike.
Tony runs the West Coast Physician’s Association that provides malpractice insurance to doctors.
