Haddad Holds Them Off
By Steven E. Way
A jammed up poker room is getting to be pretty standard faire here in New England as the World Poker Finals concludes it?s first week. Foxwoods Resort Casino, hosting it?s ninth annual classic, was the scene as 230 entrants all arrived to the $550 Limit Texas Hold ?em event yesterday at noon.
The event started on time, and moved along at a fairly rapid pace, getting to the final nine for a finish at just about 10 p.m. last evening.
After a short break, the final group would quickly lose two players as Chuck Humphrey of Palm Desert, California would knock out the two short stacks with Kings full. Both Roy Herlocher of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania and Jim Donchess of Nashua, New Hampshire would not survive the hand, and split the eighth and ninth place prizes.
Seventh place would soon be claimed by Ron Rose of Kettering, Ohio when he pushed all-in with a pair of 9?s. Sam Haddad of Warwick, Rhode Island who was playing at his second final table of the tournament would knock Rose out with an Ace high flush.
Chuck Humphrey would then push all-in playing 10, 9 after seeing a flop come 9, Q, 8. The the turn brought the needed 10, but it also brought the diamond needed by Haddad to make his flush.
Rene Brouillette of West Warwick, Rhode Island decided to get involved in the action, and made a bet to put Kostas Papostavrou of Flushing, New York all-in. Brouillette was playing a flush draw and made 10?s and 7?s which was enough for the win, and would send his opponent to the rail.
It would only be a matter of time as the limits were raised for Haddad to make short work of his remaining opponents. First, he waited as Brouillette did the deed of taking Helmut Koch of Detroit Michigan out. Koch would manage to make 8?s up but Brouillette managed a set of 5?s to eliminate Koch.
Then Haddad pounced. With both his opponents short stacked, he got Brouillette all-in with a pair of 5?s Haddad had the same pair, but with the better kicker.
On the very next hand it would be over. Victor Scaperotti of Peterson, New York played his last chips on a blind and got nothing but rags as Haddad used his Ace, King to win the championship.
Great Job Sam!
