Tournament Report
| Lakers Owner Hits Basket
L.A. Lakers Owner Jerry Buss scored his first major tournament win by slam-dunking Winnin'o'the Green' $200 no-limit hold'em event. With three players left, Buss was fairly even in chips with executive recruiter Kellie Brown and student/tutor David Anderson. They split 90 percent of the prize money and played for the rest. Heads-up with Brown, Buss had a slight chip lead but soon pulled well in front with aggressive all-in moves. He then offered Brown a generous settlement, and she gladly accepted.
But while Buss got the trophy, Brown won the most audacious bluff award. Three-handed, Anderson slow-played pocket aces. On a board of Kd-10s-9s-Qh, Brown bet 20k, as if on a flush draw. When a 7s hit the river, she moved in. Anderson, facing what he called 'an uglier and uglier board,'folded his bullets. Brown showed 5-3 offsuit. 'Well, this puts a whole new light on things,'Buss said admiringly.
This was a very entertaining final table. Also present was William Kerr, film editor for 'Lucky You,'a poker movie starring Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall, which begins filming later this month in Vegas and then in L.A. Kerr knows something about poker. He made 12 final tables last year and has a win at Commerce.
The final table started with 2k/4k blinds and $500 antes, 13 minutes left. On the third hand, Manny Toste moved in for 19k. Kerr and poker player Jacky Lee, both short-stacked, also moved in. Lee had pocket 4s; Toste, A-Q; Kerr, A-10. The board came A-K-6-J-J and Toste and Kerr chopped Lee out of action.
After blinds went to 3k-6k with 1k antes, Mehrdad Hatami moved in with pocket 5s. Toste reluctantly called with Kc-Qc. When the 5s held up, an agitated Toste was left with 2.5k, which he posted in the small blind holding 10-7. Buss broke him with A-10.
Nick Padovan, a longshoreman, finished ninth. He moved in with Q-9 on the button. Norm Wheatcroft beat him with A-6. Brown then moved into a near tie for the lead with Anderson by taking a big pot from Norm Wheatcroft. A flop of A-9-2 gave him aces and deuces and her aces and 9s. Meanwhile, Buss, who had been playing carefully, busted Wheatcroft on hand 22. Buss moved in for 18k with pocket 9s. Wheatcroft called with K-Q and couldn't catch.
With blinds at 5k-10k, Hatami finished sixth when Anderson caught an ace to his Ac-4c, outrunning Hatami' pocket 10s. On the next hand, film editor Kerr was edited out of the picture in a classic match-up. He had Ah-Kh to Brown' Q-Q, and she flopped a set. Two hands later, poker player George Panagakis went south. Holding J-10, he tried a bluff on a flop of 6-4-4 and ran into Buss'A-A.
Three-handed now, Buss picked up a couple of pots with all-in moves, but then Brown nailed him and took a big lead. He moved in with A-9. She had 7-7 and flopped a set. . Buss then busted Anderson on hand 58. He moved in with Ad-9d. Anderson called with Kc-5c, and the ace held up. Heads-up, and with blinds of 10-20k with 3k antes, Buss began running over Brown with repeated all in bets and raises. At the end, he had about a 2-1 lead when she took his offer. -Max Shapiro.
