Ace Speaks From Deauville - EPT Update No. 25
It is all over! We have our EPT Deauville 2005 champion in Brandon Schaefer, a soft-spoken young man from Seattle. On the SBB, he faced a 120,000 bet from Carl on a flop 7h 6h 3, in a pot that had been raised before the flop. Brandon had a T7 no hearts, but that seemed like a fair enough hand to move all-in with; after all, heads up it is not that easy to find a hand that is better than top pair / decent kicker. But he was up against a monster, as Carl had 4h 3h for a pair, an inside straight draw and a straight flush draw - making Carl a clear favorite over the current best hand! But fortunately for Brandon, a nine and six came on the river, no hearts, meaning that he had done the unthinkable: first winning an online satellite, then traveling all the way to Europe to play in a star-studded field, and then in the end facing not a bunch of experienced pros at the final, but a couple of other online qualifiers, including his buddy! Congratulations to a sympathetic and soft-spoken young man who may very well have a bright future ahead of him, and who listens to the name Brandon Schaefer. From Deauville I say: Goodbye to you all. I hope you liked this coverage, and see you in a couple of week for the sixth stage of the European Poker Tour, coming from Vienna - the place where I started my own poker career, working as a dealer for Concord. But that's for next time. For now, it is Goodbye from France where a bunch of American online qualifiers have beaten a field of tough Europeans, in a truly exiting event. It's adieu from France - see you all next time!
